How to calculate a tip step by step

A worked example: an 18% tip on a $64.50 bill split between two people.

  1. 1. Multiply the bill by the percent

    64.50 × 18 = 1,161

  2. 2. Divide by 100

    1,161 ÷ 100 = $11.61 tip

  3. 3. Add the tip to the bill

    64.50 + 11.61 = $76.11

  4. 4. Divide between the group

    76.11 ÷ 2 = $38.06 each

The quick mental version: 10% of the bill is the decimal point moved one place left. Double it for 20%, halve it for 5%, and add the two together for 15%.

Mental shortcuts that always work

10% is the anchor. On a $64.50 bill, 10% is $6.45. From there, 20% is double ($12.90), 5% is half ($3.23), and 15% is 10% plus 5% ($9.68). No calculator needed once you have the 10%.

Rounding up is normal and usually easier for everyone at the table: on that $64.50 bill, leaving $75 or $80 in total is close to an 16–24% tip and avoids splitting cents.

Tipping questions people ask

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. Example: a $64.50 bill with an 18% tip = 64.50 × 18 ÷ 100 = $11.61, making $76.11 in total.

How do I work out a 20% tip in my head?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10% of the bill, then double it. On a $64.50 bill that is $6.45, so a 20% tip is $12.90.

How do I split a bill with the tip included?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. A $64.50 bill with an 18% tip is $76.11, which is $38.06 each between two.

What percentage should I tip?

Tipping customs vary a lot by country and service. In the United States 15–20% is common in restaurants; in much of Europe and Australia tipping is optional and smaller. Check what is usual where you are.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Either is accepted. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly less; many people simply use the total on the bill because it is quicker.

How do I check what percent I tipped?

Divide the tip by the bill and multiply by 100. A $12 tip on an $80 bill is 12 ÷ 80 × 100 = 15%.
