How to calculate percent off step by step
A worked example: 30% off an $80 jacket.
1. Multiply the price by the percent
80 × 30 = 2,400
2. Divide by 100
2,400 ÷ 100 = $24 saved
3. Subtract the saving
80 − 24 = $56 to pay
4. Sanity-check
56 ÷ 80 = 0.70 → you paid 70%
Faster shortcut: 30% off means paying 70%, so 80 × 0.70 = $56 in one step. Subtract the percent from 100 and multiply.
Stacked discounts are smaller than they look
“20% off, then take a further 10% off at the till” is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72, so you pay 72% and save 28%.
The order never matters — 10% then 20% gives exactly the same total. What does matter is whether a coupon applies before or after tax, so check the receipt if the number looks off.

Percent off questions people ask
How do I calculate percent off a price?
- Multiply the price by the percent off and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it. Example: 30% off $80 = 80 × 30 ÷ 100 = $24 off, so the sale price is $56.
What is 20% off?
- 20% off means you pay 80% of the price. Multiply the price by 0.80. On a $45 item that is $36, saving $9.
How do I find the original price before a discount?
- Divide the sale price by (1 − percent off ÷ 100). A $56 item that was 30% off started at 56 ÷ 0.70 = $80.
How do stacked discounts work?
- They apply one after the other, not added together. 20% off then a further 10% off is 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72, so 28% off in total — not 30%.
How do I work out 25% off in my head?
- 25% off means paying three quarters. Halve the price, halve it again to get the 25%, then subtract. $60 → half is $30, half again is $15, so you pay $45.
Is percent off the same as a discount percentage?
- Yes — they mean the same thing. "40% off" and "a 40% discount" both reduce the price by 40% of the original.
